How do you afford a baby?

Nick and I are considering "trying" to have a baby in the near future, and we're not sure how anyone in this world can afford one. So this blog is for people who have been through the whole baby process... What insurance did you get on? How much did you pay monthly? Deductible? Etc... If you have any advice on this, let me know. I have heard from multiple people that you need to be on it for at least a month before you get pregnant, so we kinda want to get on it soon. So would you help a sista out? Thanks guys! :)

  1. Sheri, you probably qualify for medicaid/ medicare, the do cover almost every medical expense, but you have to be pregnant before they accept you. You can also consider getting secondary insurance, like aflack. But as of Jan 1, 2011 you should be allowed to go BACK onto your parents health insurance regardless of marital status until you are 26. Talk to you parents about it and have them look into it.

  2. Ok i agree with what the girl above me said. Get aflack. My sister in law got it and she actually ended up making money each month from it. I think medicaid will be your guy's best option. They don't have a monthly payment and they cover everything. I don't know your financial situation but your both students, newly weds, and i'm guessing you would probably be able to get it. A few things about medicaid you should know though is they are very slow. It will take probably 3 months to know if you get it or not. They will ask you for lots of financial documents and you will have to call them multiple times to remind them to work on your account. You will have to get a insurance other then them at first and pay for it for a few months because you can't apply until your pregnant and it takes a while for you to get covered. So you will end up having to pay for insurance for at least a few months. So keep that in mind. We didn't have insurance because we weren't exactly expecting baby girl and insurance companies will absolutely not cover you if you are even a week pregnant. So apply early but not too early. I have the numbers and everything for insurance places if you want them.
